This blog isn’t about cooking, but it does take place in my kitchen, so I hope you’ll pour a cup of coffee (or tea), sit back and enjoy a story.

A few months ago, a Hobby Lobby opened in my town. This is the first store in a brand new shopping center we have needed for many years so there’s a lot of excitement around it. As much as I’d like to be, I’m not very good at crafts so a store like Hobby Lobby is a little overwhelming.

 

Let me go back and give you a little history. My grandmother was super crafty. She built whirly-gigs, made rainbow lights & latch hook rugs, and when I was little she taught me how to make owls. We used two styrofoam balls, some toothpicks, felt, pipe cleaners, and plastic eyes. I wish I had a photo to show you because I loved making them. I remember going into this small, independent craft store with her to get our supplies. Before my visit to Hobby Lobby I hadn’t thought about those owls in years, but now I think of them each time I stop in.

With a sense of renewed craftiness, I embarked on a mission to make some gifts to give out at Christmas. Body scrubs seemed to be the easiest item for me to make and I had already seen some adorable jars that would be perfect for this use.

 

After I collected my jars I wandered the store looking for cute tags and ribbon to help dress them up. When I had all my supplies, I went home & read a couple of short books on how to make body scrub and several suggested recipes. I managed to make four different scrubs and deliver them just in time for Christmas.

 

I enjoyed trying something new and each time I visit Hobby Lobby I get new ideas. Right now I’m working on creating a custom cork board. We’ll see how that goes. Doing little projects reminds me of the times I spent with my grandmother and I treasure each of those moments.
